Whether you’re a unit manager, clinical lead, trainee or consultant, the National Endoscopy Database (NED) is an extremely beneficial resource. NED reduces the burden on services by providing an efficient and cost-effective solution to carrying out audits and performance reviews. As NED seamlessly automates real time capture of clinical data directly from a unit’s ERS, virtually no resource is required from individual services to maintain and update the database. By auditing KPI’s against nationally set standards, NED provides endoscopists with the feedback they need to improve their own individual performance The National Endoscopy Database is an exemplar project of a learning health system. NED will provide high quality, benchmarked endoscopy performance reports, allowing endoscopists, providers and commissioners to identify potential issues rapidly, permitting support to improve healthcare quality. In 2024, over 2 million endoscopy procedures were captured across OGD, Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, ERCP, EUS and Enterology. Since procedure recording first started in 2016, there has been over 10 million procedures uploaded into NED.
NEDi2 NEDi2 captures a wider dataset for OGD, Colonoscopy and Flexible Sigmoidoscopy as well as extra procedure types including ERCP, EUS and enteroscopy. The dataset will support audit and KPI reporting in line with recent BSG and ESGE guidance on quality assurance of upper GI endoscopy, ERCP and EUS. A broader range of colonoscopy metrics is also supported. The NEDi2 dataset was developed following extensive consultation with the UK endoscopy community and endoscopy reporting system manufacturers. Our updated NEDi2.1 is the most recent version of the NED schema. This version contains a field for a Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) result and its inclusion will enable local and national auditing of FIT use in the urgent suspected cancer lower GI pathway. The procedures captured can be used in a variety of ways to help improve quality and safety of endoscopy, through audit, training and research
